What is Child Marriage?
Child marriage is the formal or informal union of any child under the age of 18. It is estimated that worldwide 15 million girls are married before the age of 18 each year. Child marriage disproportionately affects girls and is detrimental to their education, development, autonomy, and health. Learn more about child marriage in our films below:
A ten year old girl in Ethiopia marries a fifteen year old boy in a church wedding. Early marriage and childbirth poses significant risks to a young girl's body, which is not yet fully developed. This film looks at the reasons for and consequences of this traditional practice. Made in cooperation with the Ethiopian Minisitry of Health.
