 Melaku Getachew was born on 10th October, 1959 in the town of  Debre Zeyit, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

 He graduated in law from University of Warwick. Postgraduate  degrees  from London and Warwick in Business Law and Law in  Development,  respectively, followed.

He was admitted to the Roll of Solcitors and currently practices in London in the areas of Commercial Law and Law of Properties.
