This October, SafeHands’ latest film Hibo’s Story premiered to a star-studded audience with HELLO! Magazine.

Editor and Chief of HELLO!, Rosie Nixon, hosted the premiere of Hibo’s Story in the company of celebrities including Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh, presenter Natalie Pinkham, KISS FM DJ Neev Spencer and international human rights lawyer Kirsty Brimelow.

Hibo’s Story sees SafeHands Ambassador and anti-Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) campaigner Hibo Wardere speak about her harrowing personal experience. Cut at 6 years old while her mother looked on, Hibo has endured ongoing physical and emotional trauma and has spent questioning that fateful day. Today, she is one of the UK’s foremost anti-FGM campaigners, committed to ensuring no girl should ever be subjected to this extreme form of abuse.

“I could not have been more proud to gather some famous friends together in support of this incredibly important film by SafeHands for Mothers,” Rosie said during the evening.

The film was followed by an exclusive interview with Hibo by BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour presenter Jane Garvey. Hibo spoke about her motivation to speak out against FGM:

“It took me a long time to accept that I needed to talk to someone and to talk about me. It was through seeing films like this that I learned it was okay. You need organisations which address these deep, dark traditions and bring them to light. And that is what SafeHands does."

The evening was a great opportunity to share Hibo’s Story and the work of SafeHands for Mothers with a new audience who have the power to spread the word and get involved.

“Hibo’s Story is an emotive, powerful account told by an inspirational woman. We are so proud that Hibo trusted SafeHands to capture her story," said SafeHands Founder Director, Nancy Durrell McKenna.

We look forward to more opportunities to partner with HELLO! to celebrate the power of survivor advocates like Hibo, to end FGM.
