Leading Safe Choices

A lack of knowledge about the simplicity and safety of long-acting methods of family planning in South Africa and Tanzania means that health care providers are missing opportunities to provide women with effective methods of family planning.  This missed opportunity by the health provider may lead to unplanned pregnancies and unsafe abortions.  In collaboration with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) in 2016, we used the power of film to reduce stigma and misconceptions surrounding post-partum family planning (PPFP), comprehensive abortion care (CAC), and comprehensive post abortion care (CPAC).

As part of the Leading Safe Choices project, we:

  • Produced and subsequently screened the film Leading Safe Choices to service providers, lead professionals, managers, public health experts, high-level decision makers policy and advocacy specialists
  • Improved the skills of healthcare professionals, inspiring them to deliver high quality respectful reproductive health services
  • Motivated healthcare providers and managers to attend RCOG training on CAC, CPAC and PPFP and get involved with the programme
  • Challenged stigmas and misconceptions on CAC, CPAC and PPFP
